Instagram is about to launch Edits: everything you need to know about the CapCut competitor

Instagram’s video editing app, Edits, is expected to launch very soon on iPhone, then Android. This is an opportunity for the Meta social network to reveal a little more…

Edited Thursday, March 13, 2025, 9:38 a.m.: Initially scheduled for Thursday, March 13, the release of Edits was initially pushed back to March 31, before now showing a launch date of April 30, 2025.

Meta and Instagram are trying to catch up with ByteDance, the maker of TikTok, but also of CapCut, a video editing app particularly popular with users of the Chinese social network, as well as with any creator of mobile video content. The American social network has given a preview of Edits, its new application which is due to see the light of day soon.

Instagram’s Edits Revealed Ahead of Launch

“The countdown to the rollout of Edits has begun.” On Meta’s social media, Instagram announced that its smartphone video editing app was almost ready for launch. Its goal? To allow all Instagram followers to quickly capture, edit, and publish videos on the platform using this cross-platform app, which is obviously reminiscent of CapCut. Edits is expected to be released on March 13, 2025, initially on iPhone, before an Android version arrives later this year.

Edits won’t be a simple copy of CapCut and will offer a much broader range of creative tools, perhaps for a smaller audience, said Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s boss.

At the end of January 2025, initial information was released, revealing several features of the application:

  • Video recording up to 10 minutes, with lens adjustments,
  • Video and audio editing tools, such as: timeline, cut, background editing, green screen, video overlay, adding sound or text, sound and voice effects, stickers, noise removal, etc.,
  • AI tools for selecting or animating elements, generating customizable backgrounds or subtitles,
  • Project management and inspiration tabs,
  • Watermark-free export and a statistical dashboard.

A conventional interface and advanced editing tools

A few days before the launch, Instagram has revealed a little more about Edits. The application will indeed integrate a tab grouping all the projects created, allowing multiple editions. In addition, it will be possible to publish videos edited with Edits directly on Instagram: these will then be labeled “Created with Edits” or “Made with Edits”, in the form of a button and not a watermark, as visible in the video below.

As for AI tools, which should represent one of the app’s major assets, Instagram also revealed a little more. In particular, we should find a smart selection option, allowing you to isolate objects or people with precise tracking, avoiding lengthy rotoscoping tasks.

It remains to be seen whether this type of tool will prove to be as effective as advertised. And to hope to be among the very first users, it’s already possible to register on the App Store for a pre-download.
