Instagram gives five tips to maximize the reach of content creators, so that they can reach a broader and more specific audience within the META app.
Instagram has shared an update on its efforts to increase visibility for smaller creators.
According to the platform, these changes have allowed more creators to reach a broader and more specific audience within the app.
In April last year, the META app announced an initiative to favor original creators by reducing the reach of aggregator accounts and prioritizing original content over recycled posts whenever possible.
Additionally, Instagram has implemented an update to its algorithm to give new content more initial visibility through testing with smaller audiences.
“When you post a reel on Instagram, it’s shown to both your followers and people who don’t follow you. Among non-followers, your reel is first recommended to a small audience that we think might enjoy it. As this initial audience engages with the content, the best-performing reels are shown to a broader group, with the best of these reaching even larger audiences. This process is designed to level the playing field, distributing content based on engagement and not just the creator’s follower count.”
Content Recommendations on Instagram
Instagram says this update is now fully live, which has allowed many creators to get more views on their posts.
Additionally, the increase in total video viewing time on the app has created more opportunities for creators, as more users consuming more content multiplies the chances of exposure.
The platform also highlights that users are sharing more Reels with their friends, with more than 4.5 billion daily reshares on Instagram and Facebook.
This combination of increased activity and an updated recommendation system has been an advantage for smaller creators, helping them increase their visibility within the app.
How to take advantage of Instagram recommendations
To benefit from this system, Instagram encourages creators to post content that is eligible for recommendations, meeting the necessary requirements to maximize their reach.
Content must adhere to Instagram’s Recommendation Guidelines, avoiding low-quality, sensitive, or inappropriate posts for minors.
The platform also advises creators with these five tips:
- Post frequently: Since many users view reels from accounts they don’t follow, each post has the potential to reach a whole new audience.
- Create self-explanatory content: If your goal is to attract new followers, reels should make sense even to people who don’t know the creator.
- Add audio: Adding music or sound to your reels helps capture attention and attract new audiences.
- Keep experimenting: Not everything you post will be a success, but every post is a learning opportunity. Over time, experience will help you understand what works best.
- Embrace unpredictability: The recommendation system makes the reach of each post harder to predict, but it also gives all creators a fair chance to stand out.
