Gemini Live: Live video is available for free on Android

Gemini Live

The feature, inspired by the one developed by ChatGPT, was initially intended to be reserved for Gemini Advanced subscribers.

Gemini: Video sharing available for free for all Android users

Earlier this month, Google announced the launch of a new video-sharing feature on the Gemini mobile app. Combined with the Gemini Live voice mode, it allows the chatbot to see what’s displayed on your camera and comment on it aloud. If you’re a regular ChatGPT user, this new feature should remind you of the video analysis feature rolled out last December in the United States, and in January in France, from which it was largely inspired. But Gemini goes a step further: the tool doesn’t just have access to your device’s camera, it can also access your screen.

Google originally planned to limit this feature to users of the Gemini Advanced paid plan on the Pixel 9 and Samsung Galaxy S25 devices. But, in a generous mood, the company has finally decided to make it available for free on all Android devices. It is currently rolling out and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks.

Video sharing on Gemini: how to use it?

In a blog post published during the launch of the feature, Google outlined several use cases. Screen sharing in Gemini Live will offer the following possibilities:

    1. Organize your space: By pointing the camera at a messy drawer or cluttered shelf, Gemini can suggest how to sort, optimize space, or decide what to donate or throw away.
    2. Boost your creativity: If you’re lacking inspiration, you can ask Gemini to help you by showing it inspiring photos via screen sharing. From these images, it can suggest ideas for writing, drawing, or creating.
  1. Troubleshoot live: With the camera input, you can show a faulty object to get practical advice in real time.
  2. Shopping: By sharing your screen or wardrobe, Gemini can help you compare products, give outfit reviews, and recommend complementary items.
  3. Improve your skills and content: Whether it’s a blog post, a social media post, or a portfolio, Gemini can analyze the content, suggest adjustments, and offer personalized feedback.

Gemini Live: An inevitable comparison with ChatGPT

Until now, Google has never really managed to catch up with OpenAI. This new Gemini option tackles one of the most spectacular innovations presented by ChatGPT since its launch, to which it will inevitably be compared. The bar is high for Google: ChatGPT’s video analysis is particularly responsive and benefits from excellent understanding of the environment. The bugs observed during its first weeks of availability have also been fixed, which has helped increase the naturalness of conversations.

Google’s highly structured demonstrations currently suggest a less polished version. However, we’ll have to wait until we can test it in real-life situations, once the feature is finally available, to get a clear idea of its potential.
