Meta AI Launches Mobile App: Smart Assistant or Useless Gadget?

Meta AI Launches Mobile App

Meta has rolled out a mobile app for its in-house AI, Meta AI, to compete with ChatGPT and Gemini.

Meta AI on WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Meta AI at the beach, Meta AI shopping, and now Meta AI in your pocket, everywhere, all the time. Mark Zuckerberg’s company’s in-house AI shows up where it can be seen, while being useful nowhere. It’s now coming to your iOS and Android smartphones, in a dedicated app. This app, while well-established in app stores, is currently unusable in France.

A Meta AI application to compete with ChatGPT and Gemini

After having integrated, not without difficulty in Europe, its AI into all its social platforms, Meta has unveiled the Meta AI mobile application: a standalone version supposed to work in the same way as the ChatGPT or Gemini applications, from OpenAI and Google. Powered by the Llama 4 language model, this new interface allows you to interact with  Meta’s “intelligent” assistant, capable of answering questions, generating images or even holding a natural voice conversation thanks to so-called full-duplex technology.

Now you can experience personalized AI, built around voice conversations, with Meta AI, within a standalone app, Meta announced.

Meta AI hopes to distinguish itself from its competitors by its ability to adapt its responses based on context and data from the user’s Facebook and/or Instagram profiles, as you will need to connect an account linked to these networks to be able to use the application. It is therefore part of a logic of advanced personalization, which must take into account the preferences and habits that each person shares with the assistant ( “like your passion for travel or learning new languages,” says Meta).

A Discover feed to find out everything you’re not interested in

“Like all our platforms, Meta AI was designed to connect you with the people and content that interest you,” Meta warns. Indeed, one of the unique features of the Meta AI app is the social component it offers. The service includes a Discover feed that gives users the opportunity to share their interactions with the assistant, whether it’s conversations, generated images, or creative prompts. Who, indeed, hasn’t wanted to know what you’re telling an AI?

The Meta AI app includes a News Feed, a space to share and explore how others are using AI. You can view the best shared suggestions or customize them. And as always, you’re in control: nothing is shared in your News Feed unless you publish it.

This community feed is meant to foster discovery, inspiration, and collective experimentation with AI, not offer ever more intrusive or meaningless content. It will thus be possible to like, comment, and remix this content, in the purest tradition of the Meta offering.

Data vacuum and eyeglass merchant

This new data vacuum made by Meta is now available on the French App Store and Play Store. But… you won’t be able to test it. While it took the firm months to deploy Meta AI on its social networks in Europe, due to stricter rules on the Old Continent, particularly regarding the use of personal data and user consent, the same problem affects the AI assistant’s standalone application. Thus, while Meta specifies in its blog post that Europe is absent from this initial deployment, no information will be provided to you when you download or launch the application.

Indeed, after associating your Instagram and/or Facebook account with the Meta AI app, and thus accepting an initial use of your data, you will find a strangely empty application. No screen allows you to enter a prompt or converse with the AI, only a few parameters are accessible. On the other hand, Meta will not hesitate to offer you to buy its Ray-Ban glasses of the future, with which it is possible to film, record, broadcast, without anyone’s knowledge, in an absolutely unproblematic manner, for the modest sum of 400 euros.
