WordPress’s parent company has just acquired WPAI, a company specializing in the creation of AI products for the CMS. Here’s a look!

Automattic Acquires WPAI

Automattic, the company that makes WordPress, announced Monday that it has acquired WPAI, a startup specializing in artificial intelligence solutions for WordPress. Founded in 2022 by James LePage, Greg Hunt, and Ovidiu ‘Ovi’ Iulian Galatan, and based in Texas, this startup has already developed several popular products for WordPress, including:

  • CodeWP: An integrated development environment (IDE) designed for WordPress developers.
  • AgentWP: An autonomous AI agent capable of performing various tasks, such as content generation, maintenance, and site security.
  • WP.Chat: A free tool, similar to ChatGPT, designed to answer questions related to WordPress.

“Redefining the way users and developers work with WordPress”

For their part, members of the WPAI founding team are joining Automattic to lead “the exploration of applied AI as an interaction paradigm for WordPress ,” the press release states. Their responsibilities will include overseeing the testing, design, and integration of AI solutions within the core WordPress ecosystem, in order to “redefine how users and developers work with WordPress . ”

In its own announcement, WPAI states that its mission will focus on establishing standards for AI in WordPress, improving core functionality, and creating new AI-powered tools for users.

Our work at Automattic will focus on improving WordPress accessibility through applied AI solutions. […] We will work closely with the WordPress community to thoughtfully implement these improvements while preserving the values of open source, WPAI said.

Additionally, the CodeWP and AgentWP tools are expected to disappear in their current form. The technology powering these platforms will be “reimagined and integrated into new offerings under the Automattic umbrella .” Details of the transition will be announced in the coming months.
